My primary steampunk persona page can be found on MySpace here.

My public blog is found here. This blog will be the primary host for my weekly series Beyond Victoriana, plus other fandom thoughts and even (gasp) non-steampunk related things.

I currently assist The Penny Dreadfuls in various endeavors, but will consider any other contract for a Large But Reasonable Fee.

Introduction:

People know me by many names, all with macabre connotations:

To the Indochine gouverneurs, I am la terreur de tonkin, the "Terror of Tonkin."

To my targets, I am "Death with a Smile."

To the Five Great Families, I am "Wanted: Dead or Alive (but preferably very, very dead.)"

To everyone else, I am Ay-Leen the Peacemaker, Tonkinese assassin for hire. "The Peacemaker" aspect refers to the sense of eternal tranquility that I bring to my targets and the blissful satisfaction I give to my employers.

"The Peacemaker" also refers to my prize weapon, a Chinese-engineered steam- and amberic-powered hand cannon with which I blow people into the next life in a most satisfying manner.

For the last several years I had run a successful freelancing small business disposing of various unwanted fellows for a Large But Reasonable Fee. Life was good. I could afford shiny weapons with which I shot, gouged or pummeled through the heads, chests, or groins of various people (the latter task was the usual request of Disgruntled Ladies).

But suddenly, all of that has changed...

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who hopes to bestow eternal tranquility to their most unwanted and unfavored business partners/cheating husbands/unfaithful wives/greedy grown children/selfish bosses/feuding enemies. I charge a Large But Reasonable Fee (to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis).

Thanks for all the linkage--I've seen them before, but it's an interesting assessment about what's become "common knowledge" for steampunk diversity, eh? ^-^ I'd actually recommend this article by Jha Goh too: http://www.racialicious.com/2009/06/2

Thanks for your thoughts -- and if you know anyone who does non-Eurocentric stuff like these examples, that's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see. Unfortunately, southeast Asia, Africa and the middle east were basically exploited for their n…

When we set up our group we made the choice to convert Jacksonville itself instead of recreating Victorian England here. We have incorporated so much of what was going on in the real historical timeline into what we wanted to punk out, to the point…

Dear Miss Ay-leen,

Good to hear from you, madam... let me do a bit of work - there are some 'international' (non-english) Steampunk links on the Heliograph, and oddly, one of the best Steampunk groups is the Brazillian "Conselho Steampunk" - beautiful site, but alas, I only speak Spanish, not Brazillian/Portugese.

One can hope that the event can be organized....It finally came to my knowledge that the home is a public residence but they love to work with the community. A tea party would be lovely though, I take it you've been to a lot of them. The last one I went to was hmm... it was elementary school for my birthday, this place did victorian tea party themed birthdays for young girls.XD And my parents wonder why I ended up like this....

One of the interesting challenges non-Eurocentric steampunk faces is how technology can be re-imaged for peoples that did not develop industrialized technology during the nineteenth century. Case in point this week:… Continue

Beyond Victoriana #8: Captain Sakuragi's Underwater Warship

When Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was published in Japan in 1878, science fiction fever infected Japanese writers, and within a few years, imitations of Verne's mysterious submarine Captain Nemo cropped up in their adventure stories. The most famous is Captain Sakuragi from Oshikawa Shunro’s six-part series Kaitei Gunkan (The UnderwaContinue

Beyond Victoriana #7: Yinka Shonibare MBE: Revealing the Transnationality of Culture

Yinka Shonibare, MBE, a self-described “bicultural” artist, was born in England but raised in both England and Nigeria. He is best known for his series of art pieces where coffee-colored mannequins are outfitted in eighteenth-century clothing made from brightly designed “African” fabrics.
